Race day

It was race day Sunday at Sunburst for the Metropolitan Milwaukee Ski Council. It was the final race for the six event season. Members and guests raced two slalom and two Giant Slalom runs as usual. Conditions were excellent with soft snow, a bit of flat light but a forgiving course. Crashes were few unlike some of the Olympic races recently. Come out and enjoy the fun. As many as 60 people take part. Cost is minimal and the camaraderie is outstanding. Events such as these improve all of our personal skiing and conditioning. Race Day-Milwaukee Ski Council

The Metropolitan Milwaukee Ski Council held their fifth race of the season series Saturday, February 6th at Heiliger Heugel, aka Holy Hill ski area, north of Milwaukee and across from the famous shrine.

A strong northeast wind howled at the hill. Unlike the prior Holy Hill Race, two weeks ago, when a thick damp fog enveloped the area, visibility was good. It is important to be able to see a few gates ahead which was impossible last race.

The folks at Holy Hill are kind enough to permit racers to buy a ticket and ski at the private club, once or twice annually. A lunch time hot dog and after race Sprecher Amber Barrel stuck in the snow aided the effort.

As in the past each racer skied two slalom runs and two Giant Slalom runs. In slalom, single gates are set closely and most racers wear shin guards and custom pole handles to prevent pain as skiers smack gates in an effort to complete the course in the shortest time possible.

In, GS double gates are set up and the course is faster and less technical. Local ski and social clubs, like the Sitzmarks, Vagabonds, Snowmads and a new team known as the Alpine Valley Race team, which I am a member of, compete. Anyone can also show up on race day and pay a few bucks and be a "temp" racer and get involved.

Many participants help in setting up and tearing down the courses and taking times.
Afterwards an award ceremony is held and many are winners.
