Cascade Mountain Skiing

Cascade Mountain had good conditions Saturday considering it rained hard and long midweek. We awoke Saturday and saw the first measureable snow of the season here. The North Wall, Badger Bowl, Manitou and Cindy Pop were open as well as many other trails. Crowds were lighter than a typical Saturday. Come on out and take some turns. There is a great new 3 consecutive day pass for $88.

Other area resorts re-opened Friday after their initial openings due to weather.

Ski Local

Sources say Cascade, Devils Head, Tyrol Basin, Wilmot, Alpine Valley, Sunburst and many other local ski areas are open. Call or check their web sites before you pack the car with your boards.

Ski Update

It seems like a slow start to winter here in the Midwest and out West. Waiting for the first big storm around here to kick start the season. Locally Granite Peak has a few runs open, Ski Brule is open and Tyrol Basin. Next week Cascade and Devils Head are expected to open. We would expect Alpine Valley, Sunburst, Wilmot and others to be open as well. Send us your reports.

Ski Swap

A ski swap is always a good time. Locally, Sunburst held one about a month ago, Cascade Mountain had one last week and today at Oconomowoc High School crowds came to buy.

Ski fever is building as the temps drop and visions of carving dance in our heads.

The Ski season is not over. Most Western Resorts are open and some are remaining open longer due to the recent snowfalls. Locally, you can ski Granite Peak and most spots in the UP.

Go Skiing!

It may be 50 or 60 degrees but that doesn't mean you can't go skiing. Granite Peak in Wausau has 72 runs open. Cascade Mountain, near Portgage is open. Devils Head plans on re-opening Saturday as does Sunburst. Wilmot and Alpine Valley are closed for the season.

Travel to the UP and Indianhead, Powderhorn, Blackjack, Ski Brule, Mount Bohemia, Marquette Mountain and others should be open. Check their web sites or call first. There were all open Wednesday and plan on being open. If you can't jump on a plane or drive 16 hours west these are your options. Tyrol Basin, west of Madison will be open.

Surprise Snowstorm

A surprise snowstorm dropped a few inches of wet snow on the area overnight and during the morning Wednesday. At least it surprised me. There was to be rain in the south and more than 6 inches in central Wisconsin. At least that was the forecast. This time of year it is a bit tricky to forecast. Get some turns while you still can.

Monday Night Race League

The final Monday night Giant Slalom race kicked off at 7PM at Alpine Valley in East Troy, Wisconsin last night. A banquet complete with chicken and lasgana and other goodies capped off the night. All racers attempted to complete two runs as fast as possible so they could head to the buffet line and receive their season ending raffle prize. I was awarded a bottle of Captain Morgan for my efforts. I was tempted to grab the Atomic boot bag but I have a boot bag and you can always use some extra rum.

Fox Hill

Sunday we managed to find untracked powder between the trees of Fox Hill, a small, 4 rope tow ski area with some of the steepest steeps in the area. There is no grooming and the skiing experience is unlike any you can find in the Midwest as far as I know other than Mount Bohemia. If you can ski Fox Hill, legend has it you can ski anywhere.

Last year the club celebrated their 100th anniversary.

Skier Tales

A wintry weather pattern brought cold temps and 2 inches of fresh snow to the area around the Wisconsin River Valley and Baraboo Hills. Cascade Mountain entertained large crowds of an international group of people who enjoy the outdoors.

We managed to teach about 30 people over the course of three lessons to successfully and safely ski. Along with the other staff it would be safe to say hundreds conquered their fears and learned the love of gliding. Just another day in the life of a ski resort.

Wow- Blizzard

Wisconsin was walloped by a blizzard Tuesday night and Wednesday shutting down schools, business, and countless scheduled events. More snow fell in one dump in these parts than has fallen in more than 10 years. Skiing conditions should be fantastic locally. Take advantage of the epic conditions.
