Pond Skimming

Tyrol Basin was open Sunday March 28th and people took advantage of it. Nearly all runs were open although conditions have been better. You have to give them credit. They blew snow Thursday night. Pond skimming started at 3PM and about 13 participants schussed down the hill and launched themselves into the water outfitted with life jackets and crash helmets as rescuers remained nearby by in a 14 foot Sea Nymph.

One contestant had water skis that looked like they were more than 220 cms long. Unfortunately he was unable to navigate the hill and launch himself with full speed.
He still made a splash.

What's Open?

Great conditions are available in the West. Locally Granite Peak in Wausau, Tyrol Basin west of Madison and Indianhead in the U.P. as well as Marquette Mountain and Ski Brule are all open.

Last chance for local turns. A warm-up is on it's way. It is as cold now as it has been in nearly a month. The soft snow may now be not as potato like locally.

Spring Skiing

Spring skiing at Cascade Mountain Resort Saturday was...well Spring like. After a overnight dusting of fresh snow and colder temps the skiing surface improved from last weekend's damp conditions. Many area resorts are closed. Cascade will be open till 4:30 Sunday March 21st. Tyrol Basin, west of Madison plans to stay open another week. Granite Peak, Ski Brule and Marquette Mountain are some of the few remaining resorts open for Spring Skiing.

Lutsen Mountain in Minnesota says April skiing is guaranteed.

Ski Cascade Mountain

We skied Saturday at Cascade Mountain and taught a lesson. In the morning it rained and fog enveloped the area. Later, the rain stopped and the fog remained. Most of the runs were open and there were no lift lines! Cascade is trying to remain open till Sunday March 21st.

Monsoons Arrive

Local ski update: Sunburst plans re-opening Saturday. Alpine Valley Friday at 3PM.
On Wednesday, Wilmot had a recorded snow report from Tuesday saying 4 lifts and 23 runs are open. Not. Cascade and Devils Head are open. Devils Head is offering $50 rooms this weekend. Cascade expects to be open till March 21st. The rain will be gone. But when?

Mount Bohemia re-opens Thursday. Marquette Mountain is open as is everything in the UP, we think. Call first. Brule reports all runs are open. They made snow yesterday. The temps dipped to 16. Granite Peak in Wausau reports 39 degrees and 74 runs open.

Corn Snow

It is that time of year again. Where did the winter go? I received a few emails from places like Tyrol Basin and Granite Peak telling me to go skiing. They're right. Let's go! Tyrol had a great email talking about what to expect this time of year. The snow may be firm before noon and after four but at mid-day it can be like mash potatoes. They call it SNIRT.

SNIRT is a mixture of wax, dirt, leaves, empty PBR Tall Boys etc.

Tread carefully my friends.
